Zips Beat The Bobcats 48-37

The University of Akron Zips football team beat the Ohio university Bobcats Wednesday night 48-37 at the Rubber Bowl in Akron, Ohio.  Coming into the game, Akron had lost it’s last three match-ups including a bad loss to Bowling Green last Friday on national TV.  Wednesday night’s game was also broadcast nationally on ESPN2.  With the win, Akron improves to 3-3, 4-6 and Ohio falls to 3-4, 5-6 on the season.

The game began on a bad note as QB Carlton Jackson mishandled the snap fumbling the ball to Ohio.  The Bobcats scored a touchdown after gaining possession of the ball.  On the ensuing kick off, Akron’s Bryan Williams returned the ball 95 yards for a touchdown.  Later in the first quarter, Ohio answered by returning the kickoff only to have the TD negated by a holding penalty.  Akron led at the half 20-13 and never looked back.

The Zips used two quarterbacks in the win, although most of the snaps were taken by Chris Jaquemain.  Jaquemain was 15-24 for 184 yards and 2 TDs with 1 INT.  Carlton Jackson went 3-5 for 45 yards. Alex Allen was 4 yards short of a 100 yard rushing game with 96 yards on 14 carries. Allen found the end zone 3 times as the Zips’ big play maker for the night.  Bryan Williams also contributed 80 yards on 16 carries.

Jabari Arthur, already drafted for the Canadian Football League, continued to make his draft case for the NFL.  He reeled in 8 receptions for 129 yards and 1 TD.

In the ESPN broadcast booth, Zips fans were able to hear former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz provide the color commentary on game.  For the remainder of the season, Akron will continue to enjoy national exposure as all of their remaining games will be carried on either the ESPN2 or ESPNU networks.

Akron’s next game is next Wednesday, November 14th as they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami Redhawks. This game will be broadcast on ESPN2. Kick-off is set for 7:35 PM ET.

Akron Dominated By Bowling Green

For those Zips fans that have been complaining about Carlton Jackson not starting over Chris Jaquemain, Friday night was your night. Sort of.  Jackson got the nod from coach J.D. Brookhart against the Bowling Green Falcons due to a disciplinary suspension for Jaquemain for violating team policy.  Jackson’s only other start was against UCONN earlier this season.  Friday night, it was not meant to be as Akron was dominated by BG 44-20.

For most of the night, it was the CJ Jackson show as he rushed for 132 yards on 24 carries leading the Zips.  Unfortunately, none of those runs lead him to the end zone for a touchdown.  At the end of the first half, Jackson was close as he ran the ball to the four yard line, but the ball was stripped away and rolled through the end zone for a touchback.  There were too many plays that had Jackson taking the snap and running the ball without even looking for an open receiver.  This can work if used at key moments, but by the end of the first half the Falcon defense seemed to anticipate the play.

The Zips started to find receiver and future NFL draft pick Jabari Arthur in the second half, but the damage was already done.  Arthur didn’t catch a pass in the first half but he finished the game with 6 catches for 93 yards and 1 TD.  QB Carlton Jackson was 14 of 31 for 193 yards in the air.  He had 2 INTs and 1 fumble.

Akron falls to 2-3, 3-6 while Bowling Green improves to 3-2, 5-4.  The Zips’ next game is Wednesday, November 7th at home against Ohio University.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
