Zips Take Advantage of KSU Mistakes

In front of 21,867 fans, the University of Akron Zips outdueled the Kent State Golden Flashes by a score of 27-20 Saturday at the Rubber Bowl.  The Zips found a way to make adjustments at halftime after a lethargic first half.  Going in to the locker room, the Zips and Flashes were tied 7-7.

Early in the third quarter, KSU’s Brian Lainhart intercepted Carlton Jackson which set up 22 yard field goal giving Kent the 17-7 advantage.  The Zips’ next scoring drive utilized RB Dennis Kennedy as well as personal foul penalty against Kent State to set up a 22 yard field goal by Igor Iveljic moving Akron within a touchdown.

Carlton Jackson began the fourth quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jabari Arthur to tie the game at 17.   On the ensuing Kent State possession, QB Julian Edelman was intercepted by Akron’s Reggie Corner which set up a 1-yard rushing touchdown giving Akron the lead for the first time.

Kent State answered with a career-longest 42 yard field goal by Nate Reed with 10:55 left go bringing the Golden Flashes to within 4 points of Akron, but the Zips countered with 43-yard career-best field goal by Igor Iveljic.

With Kent down seven with less than a minute to go and the ball, Julian Edelman marched them down the field.  The game ended on an intercepted pass in the end-zone by Akron’s Davanzo Tate with no time on clock.

With the win, Akron regains the Wagon Wheel and improves to 2-2. The Zips will travel to Connecticut this Saturday.
